A new PICES Working Group on Climate Extremes and Coastal Impacts in the Pacific is under development to better understand the physical drivers and assess the predictability of extreme events and to identify indicators for the socioeconomic impacts from climate extremes.

The CLIVAR Pacific Region Panel (PRP) held a telecon on 19 November 2021 mainly to discuss candidates for the PRP membership and the options for a possible PRP in-person meeting. Nine PRP members attended the telecon.

The FUTURE/POC Topic Session on “Predictions of extreme events in the North Pacific and their incorporation into management strategies” was successfully organized on 27 October 2021, during the 2021 PICES Annual Meeting (virtual). The session was co-sponsored by CLIVAR.

A recent synthesis in Nature Review Earth and Environment led by the CLIVAR community and in particular the CLIVAR Pacific Region Panel (Cai et al., 2021, https://doi.org/10.1038/s43017-021-00199-z) assesses the potential future changes of multiple aspects of ENSO and the underlying processes behind such changes. 

The CLIVAR ENSO metrics package - a community-wide effort led by the CLIVAR Pacific Region Panel, in close collaboration with PCMDI, IPSL/LOCEAN, and NOAA - was developed to evaluate ENSO variability, teleconnections, and processes in climate models.

The Tropical Pacific Decadal Variability Working Group (TPDV WG), coordinated by the Pacific Region Panel, organised its 2nd telecon on 28 June 2021. Twenty TPDV WG members participated in the telecon.

The 7th telecon of ENSO Conceptual Model Working Group was organised on 17 June, 2021 (June 16 for some participants).

A CLIVAR Tropical Pacific Decadal Variability Working Group (TPDV WG) was established by the CLIVAR Pacific Region Panel, with 28 participants that include both PRP members and other experts and early-career scientists from the broader scientific community. 

As invited by the organisers of the 2021 “AI Earth” Artificial Intelligence Innovation Challenge -- AI Helps Accurate Weather and Ocean Forecast”, Jose Santos, Executive Director of ICPO sent his remark to the final and the closing ceremony of the competition held on 22 April.
