CLIVAR co-sponsored a session on extremes during PICES-2021

The FUTURE/POC Topic Session on “Predictions of extreme events in the North Pacific and their incorporation into management strategies” was successfully organized on 27 October 2021, during the 2021 PICES Annual Meeting (virtual). The session was co-sponsored by CLIVAR, and co-convened by Samantha Siedlecki (USA), Jing-Jia Luo (China, CLIVAR Pacific Region Panel) and Ryan Rykaczewski (USA, CLIVAR EBUS Research Foci). Over 50 participants attended the session and six talks were given by scientists on both physical and biogeochemical aspects of oceanic extreme events. Dr. Antonietta Capotondi from the CLIVAR Pacific Region Panel made a presentation on the tropical influence on the development of Northeast Pacific marine heatwaves, and the degree of predictability of these events. At the end of the session, a new working group proposal on ‘Climate Extremes and Coastal Impacts in the Pacific’ (WG-EXTREMES) was introduced by Ryan, who emphasized the need of more interdisciplinary cooperation between the physical, biogeochemical, ecological and socio-economic sciences, as well as the importance of establishing connections to the relevant activities under the UN Ocean Decade.
