The first teleconference of the Regional Focal Points (RFP) Team for the sub-region of Eastern Asia was organised on 15^th December 2020 with the participation of representatives from WCRP Joint Steering Committee (JSC), GEWEX, SPARC and CLIVAR.

We are deeply saddened and very sorry to hear that Dr Françoise Guichard, member of the CLIVAR/GEWEX Monsoons Panel, unexpectedly passed away on 5 December, 2020, in Concarneau, in her native France.

In the tropical Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, easterly trade winds prevail and upwelling occurs in the eastern equatorial basin. In contrast, the Indian Ocean is subject to intense seasonally reversing monsoon wind forcing, and the annual mean prevailing winds in the equatorial basin. This provides unique features of interannual variability of the upwelling in the tropical Indian Ocean.

The 3^rd CLIVAR community Teleconference was organised on 19^th November 2020.

We are pleased to announce that Dr Lijing Cheng, member of the CLIVAR Global Synthesis and Observations Panel, has been awarded the WCRP/GCOS International Data Prize 2020!

After finishing the Freshwater Review paper, the NORP panel organized its last telecon in 2020 on 23rd November. Most of the panel members, as well as four co-authors outside the panel attend this telecon. 

The ENSO Conceptual Model Working Group had its 3rd telecon on Nov. 19, 2020, with the participation of 16 WG members. 

The book: “Interacting Climates of Ocean Basins:  Observations, Mechanisms, Predictability, and Impacts”, has been recently published by Cambridge University press; the editor is Carlos R. Mechoso. University of California, Los Angeles; and has the contribution from Noel Keenlyside and Ingo Richter, co-chairs of the Tropical Basin Interaction RF, as well as from other members of the TBI RF.
