The call for nominations to CLIVAR Scientific Steering Group (SSG) and CLIVAR panels is now open. Deadline for nominations for appointments starting in 2019 (and 2020 for the SSG) is 10 October 2018, and nominations can be submitted online.

Jose Santos Executive Director of the Internatioal CLIVAR Project Office, attended the Global Ocean Summit 2018 (GOS 2018) during 3-5 July, hosted by the Pilot National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology (Qingdao) QNLM.

The central theme of GOS 20128 was “Enhancing partnerships on Ocean Observation and Research” and focused on four topics: 1) ocean observation and prediction, 2) deep-sea research, 3) polar seas research, and 4) ocean sustainabiolity. Centering on those topics, reports and discussion was arrenaged; a poster highlight CLIVAR’s activities was presented.

The Second International Workshop on Regional Oceanic Numerical Modeling and Observation was organized by the Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NIUST) on July 2-3, 2018, The ED of ICPO was invited to give some remarks on CLIVAR during the opening session.

The Seminar for the establishment of the International Marine Science Popularization Alliance (IMSPA) was held at the Academic Exchange center of the Pilot National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology (Qingdao) on July 5th, 2018.

The 6th Argo Science Workshop (ASW-6) is organized to prepare for Oceanbs’19 by providing an opportunity to share ideas presented in the Argo White Paper among the Argo community and to connect them to other observing networks and user communities including research/operational and other application areas.

The 23rd PIRATA meeting and the 2nd TAOS REVIEW meeting will be organized in Marseille, France from October 22 to 26, 2018. Deadline for abstract submission is: 8 September, 2018; Deadline for registration is: 6 October, 2018.

A new article entitled ‘Exploring the Interplay Between Ocean Eddies and the Atmosphere’, written by Walter Robinson, Sabrina Speich and Eric Chassignet, has recently been published on Eos (https://doi.org/10.1029/2018EO100609), summarising the workshop on ‘Ocean Mesoscale Eddy Interactions with the Atmosphere’.

This second-generation CLIVAR Science Plan builds on the important legacy of CLIVAR emerging since its inception in 1992 and redirects the CLIVAR goals and priorities for the coming decade after consultation with scientists and stakeholders throughout the climate community.
