The third regular telecon in 2021 of CLIVAR/CliC/SCAR Southern Ocean Region Panel (SORP) was held at 6^th May. Since the members of SORP are widely spread in different continents, the regular meeting has been set to alternate between two different time to accommodate every member’s time zone.

During the meeting, the progresses of the on planning workshops, the ‘NORP/SORP joint workshop’ and the ‘Fluxes in the sea-ice zone’ were discussed.

On the occasion of celebrating the 14th World Oceans Day, the China Workshop on UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) was held on 8th June 2021 in Qingdao China. ICPO was invited to attend the workshop.

After a 3-year endeavor, the Tropical Atlantic Observing System (TAOS) Review Report is now published online.

Arctic Atlantification was witnessed in the Eurasian sector of the Arctic Ocean recently. It is characterized by significant ocean warming and weakening in upper ocean stratification along with winter sea ice decline. However, the change in atmosphere–ocean–sea ice interaction during the Arctic Atlantification is still an open question. A most recently paper published in Nature Communication gives a possible answer.

A CLIVAR Tropical Pacific Decadal Variability Working Group (TPDV WG) was established by the CLIVAR Pacific Region Panel, with 28 participants that include both PRP members and other experts and early-career scientists from the broader scientific community. 

US CLIVAR organized the Tropical Pacific Observing Needs Workshop virtually from May 24-26, 2021. Five members from CLIVAR PRP and Jose Santos, Executive Director of the ICPO, attended the workshop together with other members from CLIVAR groups.
