Call for nominations for WCRP Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) Membership

The Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) provides scientific guidance for all aspects of WCRP, aligned to the overall aims and interests of the sponsoring organizations: the World Meteorological Organization, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, and the International Science Council.

WCRP is calling for (self-)nominations for membership of the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee (JSC), for a four-year term from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2024. For the upcoming membership term, (self-)nominations are sought from the social and economical sciences, in order to better address the interactions of the climate system with humanity. JSC members advise WCRP in a personal capacity, independent of their organizations or countries. The JSC is an inclusive source of leadership for international climate research and seeks nominations of mid- to senior-career researchers from around the globe.

JSC members are selected for their scientific knowledge, capability, and breadth of vision. The membership of the JSC includes not only a balanced representation of relevant disciplines in the Earth Sciences (atmospheric, oceanic, hydrological, and cryospheric sciences), but also their connections to humanity. The JSC guides the overarching objectives and priorities of WCRP, in agreement with the sponsoring organizations and the WCRP sponsors' agreement (subject to any future revisions thereof by the sponsoring organizations), and in line with WCRP Strategic and Implementation Plans.

One objective of the WCRP Strategic Plan 2019-2028 is the bridging of climate science and society, particularly to support innovation in the generation of decision-relevant information and knowledge about the evolving Earth system. This will be supported by collaborative research involving the natural sciences and the social and economic sciences, for instance in relation to risk management and disaster response, economic and infrastructure planning, public communication and education, as well as adaptation and mitigation strategies.

The deadline for nominations is 15 July 2020.

Nominations are made by filling out the JSC Membership Nomination Form.
