Abstract:

Data driven modelling is now well established for short to medium range weather forecasting, with a number of data-driven models shown to outperform existing physics-based models. Ocean modelling poses different challenges; nevertheless, there is increasing research into this area, with a growing number of data-driven ocean models.

In this talk, we begin with a brief overview of the application of machine learning to earth system modelling, and the challenges and advances in this area with respect to the ocean. We then present recent work from ECMWF developing a data-driven ocean model to be used as part of a coupled forecast system. We discuss various design choices, and show results from this model for both forced and coupled experiments.
