The Fifth General Assembly of SPARC: Stratospheric Processes And their Role in Climate, a core project of the World Climate Research Programme, will bring together a large community of international scientists, providing an ideal networking opportunity in a beautiful location. Six sessions will cover all aspects of science within the SPARC domain in both poster and plenary format:

  • Emerging and outstanding research of relevance to SPARC: Emerging science issues and all other SPARC research topics not addressed in the sessions listed below. Invited speakers: Jerry Meehl (USA), Christian Jakob (Australia), Robert Sausen (Germany), Dian Seidel (USA),Ted Shepherd (UK), and Steve Sherwood (Australia).
  • Atmospheric chemistry, aerosols and climate: Observational and modelling studies of chemistry-climate and aerosol-climate coupling in the troposphere and stratosphere. Invited speakers: Bill Collins (UK), Hauke Schmidt (Germany), Graeme Stephens (USA).
  • Stratosphere-troposphere-ocean dynamics and predictability of regional climate:    Observational, theoretical and modelling studies pertaining to the dynamical coupling of the stratosphere-troposphere-ocean system; particularly how a better representation of the stratosphere may provide additional predictability of both weather and climate. Invited speakers: Ed Gerber (USA)., Nathan Gillett (Canada), Tiffany Shaw (USA), and Doug Smith (UK).
  • Coupling to the mesosphere and upper atmosphere: How atmospheric waves and solar variability can enable coupling between the stratosphere and upper atmosphere. Invited speakers: Gloria Manney (USA), Katja Matthes (Germany), and Anne Smith (USA).
  • Observational datasets, reanalyses and attribution studies: Observed trends, extreme events, observational techniques and intercomparisons relating to atmospheric chemistry and meteorology. Invited speakers: Gill Compo (USA), David Karoly (Australia), Karen Rosenlof (USA), and Mark Weber (Germany).
  • Tropical processes: Observational and modelling studies covering all aspects of tropical processes relevant to both the troposphere and stratosphere. Invited speakers:Andrew Gettelman (USA), Bernard Legras (France), K. Mohanakumar (India), and Masakazu Taguchi (Japan).
