CLIVAR at EGU 2013

CLIVAR hosted a Townhall meeting at EGU 2013 on Monday 8th April. Martin Visbeck, co-chair of the CLIVAR SSG, presented information on the evolution of CLIVAR.
Post presentation discussions focused on the development of the CLIVAR ECS network and the integration/use of social media and blogs into both the website and ECS network.
Further discussions covered how CLIVAR can endorse projects and provide letters of support for newly proposed scientific programmes and continuted funding of established programmes. It was also emphasised that CLIVAR can provide a network of academic partners to develop scientific ideas and proposals.
The final discussion centred around the CLIVAR research opportunties. It was emphasised that the current research opportunities were not an excaustive list and dependent upon the scientific community may be expanded upon. For example, CLIVAR research opportunities do not explicitly cover ocean acidification. Such ocean acidification has strong bogeochemistry links, which is beyond the scope of CLIVAR. However, it is hoped that there will be cross disciplinary research undertaken within the CLIVAR upwelling research opportunity, and this may include work such as ocean acidification, depending on the scientific researchers working with both CLIVAR and other programmes such as IGBP.
