AGU Ocean Science Awards
The Ocean Sciences section of the American Geophysical Union is seeking nominations for the following awards and lectures:
- Ocean Sciences Award
- Early Career Award
- Rachel Carson Lecture
- Sverdrup Lecture
Deadline for nominations: 1st June 2013
The Ocean Sciences Award, Rachel Carson Lecture and Early Career Award for 2013 will be presented during the AGU Fall Meeting, 9–13 December 2013, in San Francisco.
The Sverdrup Lecture will be given at the Ocean Sciences Meeting, 23–28 February 2014, in Honolulu.
Established in 1982, the Ocean Sciences Award is presented in alternate years. Initially it was awarded for outstanding service to the ocean sciences. In 2013, the scope of this award was expanded to encompass outstanding leadership or service to the ocean sciences. A list of previous awardees can be found on the AGU Web site.
The Early Career Award is given to a member of the Ocean Sciences Section in recognition of significant contributions to and promise in the ocean sciences. The awardee must be in the first eight post-doctoral degree years of their career. One award will be given at the Fall Meeting every other year, beginning in 2002. The award includes a grant for travel to AGU meetings, which is funded by the contributions of members of the Ocean Sciences Section. The Rachel Carson Lecture honors the life and work of Rachel Carson. The person chosen to present the lecture exemplifies Rachel Carson's work with cutting-edge ocean science, especially science relevant to societal concerns. The Sverdrup Lecture honors the life and work of Harald Sverdrup. A list of previous Sverdrup lecturers can be found at the Ocean Sciences Honors Web page.
Nominations for both the Ocean Sciences and Early Career awards should include:
