News and Highlights

Updated CORE-v2 release:
Version 2 of the surface forcing for the CLIVAR Working Group for Ocean Model Development (WGOMD) Coordinated Ocean Reference Experiments (CORE) has been extended by ten years and now covers the period 1948-2006. It is available here and is documented in Large and Yeager (2008).

Recommendations from WGOMD Committee on CMIP5 Ocean Model Output published:

Griffies, S. M., A. J. Adcroft, H. Aiki, V. Balaji, M. Bentson, F. Bryan, G. Danabasoglu, S. Denvil, H. Drange, M. England, J. Gregory, R. W. Hallberg, S. Legg, T. Martin, T. McDougall, A.Pirani, G. Schmidt, D. Stevens, K. E. Taylor, and H. Tsujino, 2009: Sampling Physical Ocean Fields in WCRP CMIP5 Simulations. ICPO Publication Series 137, WCRP Informal Report No. 3/2009

Commemorative issue of Ocean Modelling

Ocean Modelling is pleased to announce a special issue dedicated to the life and contributions of Peter Killworth.  Until early 2008,Ocean Modelling was largely shaped, led and edited by Peter, its Founding Editor, who passed away on 28 January 2008. Papers are invited, including reviews, which focus on areas of research that are related to Peter’s interests and contributions to oceanography. While that can include all areas of ocean circulation, his recent interests covered

-Eddy parameterizations
-Planetary waves
-Propagating features
-Effects of topography
-Unstructured grid ocean models

Normal editorial processes will apply. Paper submission date: June 30 2009, publishing date: late -2009.

CORE community reference paper published:
Simulations are presented from seven global ocean-ice models using the CORE-I design (repeating annual cycle of atmospheric forcing for 500years):

Griffies, S. M., A. Biastoch, C. Böning, F. Bryan, G. Danabasoglu, E. P. Chassignet, M. H. England, R. Gerdes, H. Haak, R. W. Hallberg, W. Hazeleger, J. Jungclaus, W. G. Large, G. Madec, A.
