Summary

Project Status Data Information
D. Byrne, N. Pettigrew, D. Randolph, D. Witter Agulhas-South Atlantic Transport Experiment (ASTTEX)

This experiment will provide quantitative, multi-year Eulerian measurements of the strength and characteristic scales of the Agulhas-S. Atlantic mass and thermohaline fluxes. 16 moorings will monitor the transport for 24 months.

Funded 2002-2005.

Awaiting status update

N. Bindoff MARGINEX West

Survey of waters of the Antarctic continental margin between 80ºE and 165ºE, to be carried out in 2005/2006.

CLIMA

The CLIMA project focuses on the ventilation processes in the continental slope areas. A two-year plan involves one oceanographic campaign (February -March 2003, i.e. in the late austral summer). A similar activity, limited to Terranova Bay, is also proposed for the second year of activity, along with the maintenance of 6 moorings, which will be in operation for the whole two-year period. This research is part of the wider ANSLOPE programme.

End 2004. Now on analysis stage

AnSlope (Cross-Slope Exchanges at the Antarctic Slope Front)

Project aims to assess the role of temporal and spatial mesoscale variability  at the Antarctic Slope Front in determining the quality and quantity of the water mass exchanges between the shelf and oceanic domains of the  Southern Ocean.

Phase 1 (fieldwork) now finished. Phase II (analysis) now funded and underway.
G. S. Dieckmann, C. Haas, H. H. Hellmer, M. Schröder ISPOL (Ice Station POLarstern) ISPOL is a field experiment designed to improve our understanding on the role of early summer physical and biological atmosphere-ice-ocean interactions in the western Weddell Sea in global processes. ISPOL involves a 50-day (6 Nov 2004 - 24 Jan 2005) drift station in the western Weddell Sea. Cruise finished. Data being analysed
D. Stevens, K. Heywood , M. Meredith ShagEx (the North Scotia Ridge Overflow Project)

Moorings and hydro sections in Shag Rocks Passage. 6 moorings, each about 500m long with combinaiton of Aanderaa current meters, upward looking ADCP at the top.

Deployment April/May 2003.Recovery November 2004. Now on analysis stage

S. Blain KEOPS KEOPS will study the effect of natural iron fertilisation of the ocean by the Kerguelen plateau on the biological pump of CO2 and on the cycles of other chemical compounds relevant for climate. Cruise took place in Jan-Feb 2005

AMISOR (Amery Ice Shelf Ocean Response) [pdf]

Study of ocean ice shelf interaction beneath the Amery Ice Shelf, 2001 to 2002.  CTD sections along face of ice shelf; 7 moorings; instrumentation deployed through holes drilled in ice shelf.

Japanese/Australian moorings off Kerguelen.

There will be two-year mooring observations (current-meter, ADCP, MiroCat) to be implemented in 2003-2005, on the eastern flank of the Kerguelen Plateau (80-90º E).

2003-2005

All 8 moorings were successfully deployed Feb. 2003.

Recovered in 2005
