GSOP discusses its activities at a teleconference

The CLIVAR Global Synthesis and Observations Panel (GSOP) held a teleconference on 12th October and discussed the following points:

  1. Update on GSOP activities

Members discussed the current activities of the panel, and also continued discussion on 2 topics that could be initiated next year:

  • Impact of pandemic on observation sampling and in turn on operational/climate products
  • Impact of deep Argo floats on operational/climate products
  1. Discussion on GSOP membership

There is an open call for all CLIVAR groups and GSOP will wait until the call is eneded to received the nominations, at the same time other candidates will be idientified by GSOP members, at the moment there is only 20% of women in the panel, so this needs to be considered as well as geographical representation.  The panel will explore the possibility of inviteing representatives of OceanSITES and JCOMMOPS as members of the panel.

  1. WCRP Implementation Plan

The CLIVAR SSG co-chairs have organized 2 teleconferences one in September and one to be held at the end of October) in order to discuss with all the co-chars of CLIVAR panels and Research Foci should respond to the ongoing WCRP implementation plan, and what changes are needed in the CLIVAR community.   Two important WCRP activities at the moment are the organization of regional consultations and the development of the so-called Light House Activities, CLIVAR expects that all its groups are involved in these activities

  1. Preparation of annual report

The panel discussed the preparation of the annual report that is due on October 30th, and should cover the period: October 2019 –October 2020. Besides the main activities/products during this period, the panel needs to discuss the place/time of the 2021 GSOP meeting. Possible meetings to have a GSOP meeting at: Joint ECMWF/OceanPredict workshop on Advances in Ocean Data Assimilation. 17-20 May 2021; The AGU Fall Meeting 2021, 13-17 December 2021; and the Ocean Sciences Meeting 2022, 27 February - 04 March 2022
