We are pleased to announce the 2nd International Ocean Research Conference, which will be held on the 17-21 of November 2014 in Barcelona (Spain). The conference is sponsored by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) and The Oceanographic Society (TOS) with the support of the Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB).

The Science and Technology Alliance for Global Sustainability has launched an open competitive process for the selection of a permanent secretariat for Future Earth. The call is being managed by the International Council for Science (ICSU).

The successful bidder will host a permanent secretariat – which should comprise a headquarters and regional nodes – for the 10-year research programme. The secretariat will coordinate research activities, handle the day-to-day management of Future Earth, and liaise with key stakeholders.

The Interim Secretariat is now up and running, with the appointment of Frans Berkhout as Interim Director on July 1, Diana Greenslade as Science Officer on July 8 and Anne-Sophie Stevance continuing her role as Science Officer.

The Interim Secretariat also draws heavily on contributions from ICSU staff members Denise Young (Head of Communications), and Johannes Mengel (Communications Officer/Online Editor) and staff in the existing GEC programme secretariats. There are plans to further expand the team in the coming months, with the next recruitments being for a dedicated Communications Coordinator and an Administrative Officer.

FUTURE OCEAN – KIEL MARINE SCIENCES

Understanding the Ocean — Sustaining Our Future

The Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean” pursues a research approach that is unique in Germany: marine researchers, geologists and economists join forces with mathematicians, computing, medical, legal, and social scientists to investigate ocean and climate change from a multidisciplinary perspective. A total of over 200 scientists from Kiel University, the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, the Institute for the World Economy (IfW) and the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts are using innovative means to share their findings with the scientific community, stakeholders, decision makers, civil society and the public at large.
