CLIVAR-FIO Summer School on Biogeochemical Processes in Earth System Models

15-20 July, 2024, Qingdao, China

The field of Earth System Modeling is rapidly evolving with advancements in computational capacity and better integration of various components of the system. However, there are still challenges in the representation of biogeochemical processes in Earth System Models (ESMs) due to their complexity and the associated uncertainties.  This 3rd CLIVAR-FIO Summer School aims to address this issue by offering a focused program that equips early career scientists and students with the requisite knowledge and skills to understand and model these processes towards improvements in ESMs and our understanding of global change, while fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration.

The summer school will comprise of lectures, discussions, and practical operations, covering the topics of ocean biogeochemistry in ESMs, aerosol-climate-ecosystem interactions, terrestrial carbon sink, land-atmosphere-ocean nutrient exchanges, biogeochemistry and carbon cycling in CMIP ESMs, among others.  This summer school is to be held back-to-back with the 13th UNESCO/IOC-RTRC-ODC Training Course on “Modeling of Ocean Ecosystem” (8-13 July 2024).
